Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
You must complete CBT to ride unaccompanied on the roads on a learner motorcycle or moped with L plates (or D plates in Wales).*
The CBT course generally lasts for one day. There is no test - if you meet the required standard at the end of the course, you will receive a DL196 (CBT) certificate which will remain valid for 2 years. If you do not reach the required standard on the first day, we will arrange further tuition for you at reduced or no cost.
It is not necessary to have ridden a motorcycle before undertaking CBT however it is advisable to have already passed your theory test.
Included in the cost of the course is insurance, fuel and use of a motorcycle. We can provide you with a helmet, jacket and gloves if you do not have your own.
Tea & coffee is available from the machine in the shop, you will need to bring along some lunch.
Elements covered in the CBT course are:
- clothing & safety equipment, the highway code and laws relating to motorcyclists
- practical training in an off road environment - the motorcycle, its controls and how it works, safety checks etc
- learning to ride the motorcycle in an off road environment.
- practical on road riding for a minimum of 2 hours, encountering roundabouts, junctions, traffic lights, gradients, bends etc

With a CBT certificate, you may ride unaccompanied with L plates on a motorcycle up to a maximum of 125cc and 14.6bhp, for 2 years.
Only instructors certified by the DSA can teach CBT at an Approved Training Body (ATB) such as TT Bike Training. Upon completion of your CBT, your instructor will discuss with you the best course for you to take to obtain your motorcycle licence.
*The exception is that if you obtained your full car licence prior to 1st February 2001, you do not need to complete CBT to ride a moped.
